December Open Sew and Outreach Sew

On a rainy Saturday in December, a nice group of our members gathered to sew, chat, admire, share and laugh.  we truly enjoyed this wonderful day together.

Margaret got her cat quilt put together.  Each cat is made of a different cat themed fabric, and she used fish for the border.  So very clever!

What fun we had!!!
Alice happily inspects her strips while others enjoy chatting about sewing and chatting happily in general!

We brought scissors and blades for B'ladies to sharpen for us.

Here is Rita organizing her blocks into a design.  She used fabric from her stash!

Here is Mary getting lost in her quilting.

Betsy and Pat get into their sewing.

Mary Kay presses her tree runner.

A group helps to determine block placement....
we love to share our work and to share what we do, that is for sure.

This placemat made by President Pat will be given to meals on wheels for
distribution at a special holiday meal.

This Singer 301 from 1956 is happily sewing a doggy quilt.

Barb listens to chatting as she works at the cutting table.

Nicole uses an antique Singer featherweight to create. Love her fold out bag of supplies!

Some members chose to hand applique as they chatted.

Suzie sews steadily in our room at the Westerly Senior Center.

Tina and Sharon sew along by machine and by hand.
We thank them for all our wonderful programs they put together for us!

Betsy and Pat keep on sewing.

Hmmmm....plan plan plan!!!!

And a good time was had by all!!!!

November Meeting

At our November meeting our "Bag People" shared the bags they made from the Charlie MacDonald workshop!

And it was soooo much fun!!!

Our November Block of the Month was quite popular and so pretty!  Don't you love how they look when put all together?

Audrey shares a piece quilted by Jen.
Audrey has finally made a quilt for herself...after quilting for 38 years.  She loves coffee so coffee is on this side....but look at the other side....

Chocolate is on the other side~~~~~yummy!

Ellie has created three pieces of veggies for a January display at the Westerly Armory.
The display will be about gardening.  Here is her leeks piece.
And here is Ellie's corn growing...

These beets are just beautiful!   Ellie has a unique and beautiful style of working with fabric.

Maria shared her very festive pumpkin!

Tara put these blocks together with a flower in each center.

Tara's Pumpkins in a Row with prairie points!

Roberta finished an embroidery piece started in a workshop
presented by Lynn Kane and added a flange binding.
Her other piece is an art quilt from a Betsy Habich workshop
where she learned to transition a photo into a quilted image.

Tina admits she is obsessed with 3 dimensional EPP (English Paper  Piecing).

Pat shares a Christmas hanging.

Cheryl has completed a quilt or a friend.                                Nicole made an apron from a scrappy collection of fabric.

These quilts are from our Outreach Group.
Many members work on different parts of the quilting process.

Our speaker, Kathie Beltz gave an excellent presentation on colors and quilting.
She is well known for her quilt, "Skyfall" where
each star is made of complementary or analogous color combinations.

Kathie explains color lightness and darkness
and how this can create various effects in a
 quilt.

These two quilts are the same pattern but are made using different color schemes.

Kathie's poppy is made of many different reds.

We enjoyed Kathie Beltz's talk on color in quilts.

Members have been making placemats for meals on wheels to be distributed during this holiday season.

Our BOM (Block of the Month) was a huge success!
Our upcoming December block was on display to inspire us.

October 2022

October Meeting
In the spirit of this fall season we saw some fall and Halloween themed pieces.
Suzie made a Bonnie Hunter pumpkin table runner.

Tara's granddaughter is going love this quilt and her very special trick or treat bag!

Members had a great time looking at this month's Block of the month.
Even though the block is the same,
they all look so different with the different fabrics used.

Kathy created a Kawandi piece.
Our speaker last month, Jen Strauser,
spoke about this method and inspired Kathy to make one.
We always see new ideas!

Catherine shared a wonderful story about this quilt, started by her great grandmother and continued and repaired by her grandmother, Catherine, and family members.

Her quilt label tells the story of her quilt and how multiple generations worked on
and remembered this quilt being made.

Nicole finished a wonderful T-Shirt Quilt....it really tells a story...

Carol shared a lighthouse quilt.

Tina has been using up her scraps so she made this quilt....
but still had scraps left over so...on the back...

on the back....Tina put her orange and her scrappy hexagons together.

Outreach quilts were shared during Show and Tell.

Our outreach quilts are donated locally.

This wonderful quilt is created by arranging blocks on point.

Another quilt made by our outreach committee.

A very cheery quilt finished up by Tina for Outreach.

A kiddie quilt for donation created with a disappearing four-patch.  What fun!

An outreach heart quilt...this says it all.
Giving a quilt is like giving a hug.

An outreach quilt with a border we loved.  Made from leftovers.  Two sets of blocks were alternated with tan blocks.  What a great design.

An outreach quilt made with
Friend Ship blocks and wonderful star blocks and others.

Our speaker, Marge Tucker spoke about improvisation in antique quilts and in quilts created today.  This is a wonderful piece she created based on the Dresden plate idea but she she transformed it.  She won numerous awards for this quilt.

Marge spoke about how color and using a very different block
as a center of interest can really change a quilt.

Happy Quilting Everyone!
