2021 Raffle Quilt

2021 Ninigret Quilters’ Ruby Jubilee Raffle Quilt Project

For our 40th Anniversary show in 2021, we will be making a red and white sampler quilt.

Inspiration came from Barbara Black’s quilt Red & White- By the Numbers. (Used with permission.)

Barbara says: "The patterns came from www.justtakes2.com, a free block of the month pattern from 2012.  I changed a few of the blocks for ones I preferred, and created the distinctive, intricate border.  It won Best of Show in Fanfare 2013.  This quilt was chosen as the Commemorative Quilt to represent the 40th anniversary of the International Quilt Festival, Houston, TX.  It has been displayed at many shows, was used in all the advertising for the 2014 anniversary show, and was featured on the show pins and tote bags."

The following guidelines were provided with the background fabric at the February meeting.

1. Use any technique you’d like. Do what you do best. Machine piecing, paper piecing, English Paper Piecing, hand or machine appliqué, redwork embroidery. Please no wool work or dimensional appliqué.

2. Use the off white fabric provided plus any tone-on-tone or solid red fabric. The prints you add must read as solid red. You may choose from a variety of red values from pink to maroon and a range of hues from orange-red to blue-red. Prints should not contain large motifs of other colors.

3. Make any block pattern you’d like in one of these finished sizes: 12”, 9”, 6”, or 3”. Don’t forget the seam allowances! Make your favorite block or keep it simple and make a bunch of 4-patches or half square triangles to be used as fillers.

4. If you would rather not sew a block, you may donate a few 2.5” strips or a fat quarter of red.

5. Blocks are due at the May 12, 2020 meeting or mail to Tina Craig.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I couldn't make it to the February meeting or if I need more fabric?
Contact Tina to have a piece mailed to you.  tinastitches@gmail.com

Why is my background fabric so wrinkled?
The off white fabric came from a bolt 108' wide. It was folded with a ton of creases. Please do your best to remove the creases before cutting into it. You will need to completely submerge it in water to rinse out the creases. Please do not skip this step! Take your wet fabric to your ironing board and smooth it out. Press with a hot iron until dry. Then spray with your choice of starch, sizing or best press. Please, please, please do not piece creased bits into your block.

If I piece the off white upside down, do I need to take apart my block?
No. The tone-on-tone print is very subtle. If you can't see the difference as you are working with it, It will not be noticeable in the finished quilt.

Where can I find block patterns?
EQ8 is a great source, if you own it.
  Check your bookcase.
There are tons of free patterns online.
Contact Tina if you need guidance.

What about copyrights?
Please do not infringe upon designers' copyrights. Most websites and printed patterns will include a terms of use policy. If you really want to cover your bases, email the designer and ask for permission to use her block in our raffle quilt. Then be sure to include the block name and designer's name when you turn in the block. If you are unsure, please contact Tina.

Why can't I include wool or dimensional appliqué?
The quilt will be quilted in an edge-to-edge design and guided by a computer. Thick or dimensional elements may pose a problem.

May I use a traditional block I already know how to make?
Yes.

May I design my own block?

May I add green leaves to my floral appliqué block?
No.

No. If you already have, that's fine.

May I use precuts?
Yes. 2.5" strips or 5" squares can be very handy.

Do I need to buy fabric for this project?
No. I hope you can find a piece in your stash that's just right!

How many different reds should I use in my block?
You can make a block with only two fabrics or use lots of different fabrics. The choice is yours. I ask that you include at least a bit of the off white for consistency.
