May 2016 Meeting

Program
Nancy Graham gave a lecture and trunk show entitled "Tons of Time-Tested, Tried & True, Terrific Textile Tips & Techniques for the Timid, Trepidatious & Truly Terrified".  Nancy's shirt featured several of her favorite stamps.
Nancy started out doing traditional quilting as seen in this wolf quilt. It was a challenge quilt which required the use of black and white fabric plus one additional color. Over the years, some of the blacks have faded to browns.
Nancy uses 'found objects' to make stamps, as she is from New Hampshire, several of her fabrics feature leaves she has found on her daily walks.
Nancy also hand dyes fabric then machine quilts as in this piece.
She used a rubber lizard which she enlarged to get this favorite lizard.
The copper circles are silk over a hand-dyed batik.

Nancy likes this lizard. You can see some of the
details of her machine quilting in the second photograph.

It was amazing to see how different the same stamp could look when using different dyes.

These monoprint studies used her technique of over painting on plexiglass, then pushing the stamp down until it makes a suction type noise. The detail is shown below, along with her machine quilting.

This geometric design was created using stamps made using styrofoam trays and weatherstripping.

A friend asked Nancy to design a book jacket for an upcoming book
featuring a crow and something lost.

This piece combined dyed silk circles on hand dyed fabric with machine quilting.
Thank you Nancy!

Show & Tell
Tina C ventured into embroidery for a graduation gift.

Tina C demonstrated the four current schools of quilting using the log cabin design.
This one shows the traditional method including hand quilting. Tina showed a sample
of a contemporary log cabin, but the photo did not come out well.

The modern style using fewer pieces to give the idea of the log cabin.
The modern style features solid fabrics and emphasizes straight-line machine quilting.

And finally, Tina C's log cabin art quilt.

Bev K made a baby quilt for the art teacher at her school plus a matching doll quilt.

Pat H took a PRO chem class in Fall River. She showed samples of her classwork, including silk screening, thermofax prints with layering, deconstructed silk screen and discharge dyeing using thiox and overdyed batik. We look forward to the quilts she'll create with these fabrics.

Ellie C has started a worm farm and was inspired to create a quilt featuring her new employees.

Ellie calls this piece 'Singing Whales'.
Unfortunately, my camera continued to have issues so I don't have a
good photo of Ellie's birch forest and woodpile piece. My apologies.

Nancy L showed this completion of a class quilt project.

Nancy L also completed this Burgogyne quilt from a retreat in March.
This mystery quilt was led by Louise P.

Betsey W. also completed her hand quilted version of the same
Mystery Quilt using a green background and scraps.

Donna used scraps on her tan themed Mystery Quilt.

Kathy T used her sister's old jeans to make this lap quilt which grew to be queen sized.

Nancy B used 52 appliques and french knots to make this piece she has titled Anenome.

Thank you and Quilt On!
